Last night was my Native class and man it really is interesting. Their belief system is so unique and the way they believe in creation is very different from anything I've ever heard, but it makes sense somewhat too. This particular "clan" of natives is considered matrilineal, which means descendent from the mother. Therefore, they have the ultimate respect for women and always protect and honor their women. Also, when they marry someone from a different "clan", they take the clan name of the woman, not the man. My teacher belongs to the "turtle clan", he married his wife from the "bear clan", so her children belong to the "bear clan". When the woman have their monthly cycles, it is the husbands job to take care of the children, cook, and clean during this time. It is so that the woman can rest and cleanse, and spiritually renew her body and soul. Can you imagine??
So, there is the lesson of the week. More to follow...lol.
